Vana Holy Basil (Ocimum gratissimum), also known as African or Clove Basil, is a plant indigenous to Africa but has a strong tradition of use in Indian Ayurveda, where's it's known as "tulsi" or "tulasi." This is most striking of the three tulsi types we've grown. Plants make mildly fuzzy emerald green foliage that has an aroma reminiscent of cinnamon and licorice. Takes longer to get established than either Rama or Krishna Holy Basil, but also has a more prolonged leaf production period. Use fresh or dry as a tea.

While many purple basil strains (Ocimum basilicum) are quick to bolt (flower, then seed), Amethyst Improved is more in line with other green Genovese-types. Plants produce broad, dark purple foliage that's slightly spicier than green types, but the plants are also hardier and tend to hold longer in the garden. This is a totally practical strain for everyday use.
Amethyst Improved Basil is an annual plant that will produce harvestable foliage within 90 days when seeded in ideal climate and soil conditions.

Genovese Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an heirloom variety developed in Italy that’s the go-to for making pesto. Round, lush leaves on proud, tall plants. The plants can survive multiple cuttings throughout the season once established. In warmer climates, start seedlings early in the greenhouse and transplant as soon as frost danger has cleared at rather close spacing (2-4 inches). Plants will grow slower in the cooler spring weather but will have enough foliage to harvests by May. Thin the plants back to more ideal spacing for summer growth and enjoy your first harvests before summer has even begun.

Rama Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is the most well known variety used in Indian Ayurvedic herbalism, where it's known as "tulsi." Rama Holy Basil also has been traditionally used in Thai cuisine. Thai Basil (Ocimum basilicum) produces dark green/purple arrow shaped foliage with a captivating anise/licorice aroma and flavor. This is an easy to grow variety that’s compact (to 24" tall) and very productive. Thai Basil can be harvested and eaten fresh in salads or stir-fries or dried for use in roasts and stews. Pinch the purple flowering tops to encourage continuous production. Alternately, allow to flower to bring the pollinators; basil makes an excellent bee forage!

Kapoor Tulsi (Ocimum basilicum) is a compact, green leaved holy basil native throughout subtropical and tropical Asian geographies. Kapoor produces sweet tasting foliage ideal for making tea; it’s the most frequently grown of the holy basil types, and is easy to grow and works well in container gardens.
Plants grow up to two feet tall and are typically grown as annuals in most temperate climates, but the perennial nature of the plant means it can overwinter in warmer winter climates (Zone 10).
Seeds are certified organic.
(Quin's note, January 2024: Some fellow seed savers have taken to scientifically classify this plant as "Ocimum africanum" - I do not believe this is accurate. Ocimum africanum is a hybridized cross that's essentially a Lemon Basil. I have found no scientific literature that backs up the association of Kapoor Holy Basil with the scientific name Ocimum africanum. For the time being, I will stick with this as being a cultivar of common basil Ocimum basilicum with its market association as a Holy Basil. And I will remain open to alternate interpretations.)

Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), or Holy Basil is a highly-valued, plant, sacred to Hindus and practitioners of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine tradition.
Spiritually, Tulsi is thought to offer divine protection - the plant an incarnation of the goddess, Tulsi in Hindu mythology. Many Indian families grow Tulsi inside or outside their homes for protection from misery, fear, poverty and disease.
Krishna, or Purple Tulsi, is a relatively rare variety, with beautiful red and green mottled leaves. Krishna is known to have a stronger taste and smell, and is likely more medicinally potent than the other two varieties, Rama and Vana Tulsi.
Krisha Tulsi seeds can take up to two weeks to germinate, so be patient and consistent with watering. Press the tiny seeds into the surface of good-quality potting soil, and keep moist throughout the germination period. Seeds can be sown indoors in late winter to get a jump on spring. When the soil has warmed in spring, plant tulsi seedlings in a space with plenty of sun. Tulsi is not too picky about soil, but definitely appreciates a bit of fertility and moderate water. Harvest tulsi leaves at any time once established and growing with vigor and health.
85 days from seed to leaf harvest. Annual.
