Also called Dan Shen or Chinese Sage, Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a very valuable herb in Chinese medicine. Traditionally, the roots have been used medicinally to treat kidney failure, and multiple ailments of the heart and circulatory system ‰ۡÌÝÌÕ moving stagnant blood, and aiding circulation to the extremities. Chinese medicine considers Red Sage root to have bitter and cool energies, beneficial to those with excess heat, liver or kidney stagnation, and general restlessness and irritability.
On an aesthetic front, this is a gorgeous plant, with beautiful, soft purple flowers. The roots, when harvested, resemble that which they benefit: bright red veins. Start seeds in spring, and harvest roots in the autumn of the second year.
