Krishna Holy Basil / Tulsi

Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), or Holy Basil is a highly-valued, plant, sacred to Hindus and practitioners of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine tradition.

Spiritually, Tulsi is thought to offer divine protection - the plant an incarnation of the goddess, Tulsi in Hindu mythology. Many Indian families grow Tulsi inside or outside their homes for protection from misery, fear, poverty and disease.

Krishna, or Purple Tulsi, is a relatively rare variety, with beautiful red and green mottled leaves. Krishna is known to have a stronger taste and smell, and is likely more medicinally potent than the other two varieties, Rama and Vana Tulsi.

Krisha Tulsi seeds can take up to two weeks to germinate, so be patient and consistent with watering. Press the tiny seeds into the surface of good-quality potting soil, and keep moist throughout the germination period. Seeds can be sown indoors in late winter to get a jump on spring. When the soil has warmed in spring, plant tulsi seedlings in a space with plenty of sun. Tulsi is not too picky about soil, but definitely appreciates a bit of fertility and moderate water. Harvest tulsi leaves at any time once established and growing with vigor and health.
