White Sage

White Sage is a drought tolerant California native with tall flowering stalks and highly aromatic silvery gray leaves. Seeds are certified organic.

Size: Packet: 100 seeds (0.25 gram), OG

White Sage or Bee Sage (Salvia apiana) is a perennial shrub native to Santa Barbara County to Baja California, Mexico. The indigenous tribes of these regions, including Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cupeño, Cahuilla, Chumash, Kiliwa, and Gabrieleno/Tongva have used it for smudging and purification (its leaves have a distinct aroma when burned), as well as food and medicine. These seeds are cultivated on two farms in our region under certified organic conditions. They are not wildcrafted, wild harvested, or "sustainability wild harvested."

Key features:
  • Silvery grey foliage when mature (baby seedlings are green).
  • Drought tolerant.
  • Our white sage seed is cultivated on our own farm and certified organic.
  • Our seeds are NOT wildcrafted/wild harvested. We have maintained cultivated stands of white sage plants for seed for over a decade.
  • Grow your own - this is the only ethical way to engage with this plant.
Large mammals such as deer, antelope, elk, mountain sheep, and rabbits will eat the young foliage, and the small white to pale lavender flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other insects. Small mammals such as squirrels and rabbits, and birds such as sparrows, grouse, and quail will eat mature seeds.

White Sage can reach between 3-4 feet tall, but when in flower, plant stalks can reach well over eight feet. It may take multiple years for plants to reach this height, but soil type and climate helps the plant reach its ideal. White Sage is also drought tolerant. In fact, over-watering can kill or cause plants to lodge (tip over) from the center.

We’ve worked with our own white sage seed for more than a decade, and this has improved the germination rates compared to wild harvested seed. However, because white sage is still a genetically wild plant, expect seeds to display a fair amount of dormancy, meaning they may not sprout evenly or all at once like a typical garden vegetable.

A light, sandy-textured soil medium is ideal for starting sage seeds, but a typical garden soil also works fine. Sow 3-5 seeds per cell for every single plant desired. Keep seeds consistently moist throughout their germination period.

Baby seedlings are green, with foliage turning to the iconic silvery grey as it mature. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they reach two to three inches in height. White Sage is drought tolerant, but moderate watering toward the beginning of plants lifecycle helps them get established. As the plants mature, gradually reduce waterings to 1-2 times a week. Overwatering can kill or cause plants to lodge (tip over) from the center. White Sage will produce harvestable foliage about 120 days from seeding under ideal conditions. Plants can reach between 3-4 feet tall but plant stalks can reach well over eight feet when in flower. It may take multiple years for plants to reach this height and your results may vary based on soil type and climate.

For container growing, continually pot up as needed and bring indoors with an equivalent full sun plant light setup when substantial frosts occur. As substantial outdoor frosts will kill plants, so if you are in a region with cold winters, consider growing the plants as an annual.

        Germinated in a week!

"On a heat map, outside. I’ll send you pictures when they are bigger…"

        Great white sage seeds

"I bought 2 packs of 50 seeds, lightly scarified about half of them with fine sand paper and sowed the seeds on top of the propagation mix in this 72 cell tray. Some cells had more than one seed per cell. I watered the tray once, covered it with a plastic dome and put it on a heat mat at 74 degrees under lights. After about 4 days I started checking on it and misting the surface when it seemed like it was drying out. They started germinating in about 7 days. I thinned some cells because more than one came up. The photo shows the excellent results. This is great seed and I'm grateful to be able to grow this special plant. Thank you!"

        Excellent

"Always dependable and sell extra quality products."

        Great Germination

"Seeds germinated very well. Slow grower, like all sages. Germinated on heat mat set to 72* and under humidity done with vents open and removing dome 2x per day."

        4 months from seed

"Indoor vs. Outdoor Lake Poinsett Florida 9 have survived starting outdoor process. Attempted same time indoor. Transplanted indoors to outside too soon. They did not survive. Above ground is necessary in Florida. 50/50 Sand with "Outdoor Jungle Growth". Very limited on watering now. They are happy! I am glad to have learned which of the two same time attempts are best. It was also awesome to learn these are from Ojai were my family lives and Ventura County were I grew up! 😎 - Frank Johnson"

        Very little germination. I planted

"Very little germination. I planted it twice too."

        I will see. Love white

"I will see. Love white sage which was abundant southern CA but not in the north here. Already sowed the seeds and waiting for the sprout. Thanks"

        Pleasantly suprised by white sage

"Was skeptical, but followed instructions on packet, roughly 5 seeds per hole. Germination was better than I expected for such small seeds; 16 holes, 8 seedlings came up in 2 weeks and looking strong. Grown in closed cabinet under lights, planted 1/25/24, sprouted 1/31/24-2/5/24. Cannot wait to harden off (Gently!) Thank you much."

        Pleasantly surprised

"I am in Appalachia, zone 7a, so I didn't have high hopes for getting these off the ground. I was able to germinate about what I expected given their low, variable germination rate. The few that sprouted are coming along nicely and I'm excited to have them overwinter inside after a what hopefully will be a nice, long upcoming outdoor season. The seeds were well packed and the directions were simple to follow. Great buy!"

        Will find out...LMFAO

        "Haven't germinated yet."
